Let’s take a moment to breathe in this outstanding piece of news, courtesy of Illinois Families for Public Schools:
Let that sink in: We are the first state in the US to roll back an existing voucher scheme.
As if this isn’t enough serenity and joy for one week, the Texas legislature just stripped voucher provisions out of its education funding bill Friday afternoon.
“An amendment filed Friday morning to remove school vouchers from the Texas House’s $7 billion education bill passed during the afternoon on a bipartisan 84-63 vote”—and twice as many GOP legislators as were needed voted in opposition to vouchers. This vote is a blow to Gov. Abbott, who has been threatening to primary Republicans who vote against him on this.
Two states in one week to kick vouchers to the curb. Who would have ever imagined it possible.
P.S. - I promise you’ll hear from me soon about what Chicagoans are doing on behalf of asylum seekers.
